After suffering with cystic acne in my 20’s, resulting in multiple courses of antibiotics, Roaccutane and surgery on my face, lunch in a café in Thailand in December 2016 changed my life. The owner who was 70 (but looked about 40!) had written his own book on foods that heal, so I asked for his advice. He suggested that my acne was probably due to a damaged gut , imbalanced microbiome and high sugar and dairy intake amongst other factors. I came home and implemented his advice and within 2 months my skin was better than it had ever been!
As a chef and the son of a dentist and microbiologist with a good education, I could not believe that the advice I had received was not mainstream. I decided that I wanted to go back to college and ultimately help people to realise the possible healing benefit of food. I studied for my diploma in Nutritional Therapy at The College of Naturopathic Medicine in Bristol and after 3 years of nutritional biomedicine academic study and 200 hours of clinical training, I completed the course and graduated with a distinction.
Having my own clinic was my goal from day one and I am excited and proud to have started East Devon Nutrition. I grew up in Sidmouth and having the chance to work with people I know, in a town that I love is a huge privilege, and one that I am truly grateful for.
My approach is different to many people working in the field of nutrition – my opinion is that a lack of joy will kill you far quicker than too many carbs! I want to remove the stigma of good nutrition and make it accessible for everyone. My first love was food, I’m a committed foodie and I like to enjoy the finer things in life. I still enjoy a good night out and can be found at music festivals in the summer or enjoying the après ski in the winter! For me the key is balance and good habits.
Your mind and body are your vehicle for enjoying life. Just like owning a fast car, it is essential to carry out the right maintenance, use the right fuel and know that you can’t drive at 100mph all the time! If you don’t then the repair bills can be astronomical and in some cases life threatening!
